STEM and/or STEAM Endorsement

Metro RESA offers a PSC approved preparation program that provides approved candidates with the coursework and related field experiences to add one of the following fields to a current Georgia Professional Certificate: STEM, STEAM, or STEM with a STEAM micro-credential. Coursework includes connections to STEM and STEAM and candidates may choose to focus on one of the STE(A)M endorsement pathways.

STEM and STEAM share the same foundation of inquiry-driven, transdisciplinary learning that prepares students to solve real-world problems. Both approaches emphasize critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and the authentic application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEAM extends this work by intentionally integrating the arts—design, creativity, communication, and the human experience—to deepen understanding and broaden the ways students explore and express solutions.

Overview

Year-long program
160 contact hours/16 PLUs
Candidates can choose between a STEM endorsement, STEAM endorsement, or STEM with a STEAM micro-credential (2 additional PLU’s and a $150 fee)
Comprised of 2 separate courses, with an additional embedded authentic residency
Virtual delivery via Blackboard and Zoom; to include synchronous and asynchronous models

Learning Outcomes

Apply the core ideas, practices, and resources of the STE(A)M disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics to real-world STE(A)M problems
Intentionally integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics in logical, thoughtful ways through problem-based learning experiences
Critically evaluate complex data, draw evidence-based conclusions, and engage in effective argumentation across the STE(A)M disciplines
Enhance knowledge of the benefits of STE(A)M to make informed decisions about challenges facing the next generation, STE(A)M workforce development, and related career opportunities

STEAM Micro-Credential

Metro RESA offers a STEAM Micro-credential for professionals who hold a STEM endorsement. The coursework includes two asynchronous and two synchronous STEAM focused sessions and the submission of a STEAM Portfolio. To enroll, candidates must hold a STEM Endorsement on a Georgia Teaching Certificate.

Cost:

$150 for the 2 PLU course
Once enrolled, the candidate has one year to complete the assignments.

STEAM Micro-credential for STEM Endorsed

Course I: Elements of STEM (80 hours/8 PLUs)

This is a 60-hour course with an additional 20 hours of an embedded STEM in Action residency to apply the elements of STEM in classrooms, for a total of 80 hours. 50% of the course will be offered synchronously online and 50% asynchronously.

The course goals include:

Analyze the core ideas, practices, and resources of the STEM disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
Intentionally integrate mathematics and science in logical, thoughtful ways
Intentionally integrate technology and engineering with science and mathematics
STEM in Action Residency (embedded throughout the courses), includes collaborative planning with STEM colleagues, visiting a STEM certified school, writing a grant, maintaining a collection of STEM resources and best practices, and teaching STEM lessons developed in coursework

Course II: Intersections of STEM (80 hours/8 PLUs)

This is a 60-hour course with an additional 20 hours of an embedded STEM in Action residency to apply the intersections of STEM in their classrooms, for a total of 80 hours. 70% of the course is offered asynchronously and 30% of the classes will be held in synchronous sessions.

The course goals include:

Integrating STEM disciplines through the development of a PBL unit
STEM in Action Residency (embedded throughout the courses), includes collaborative planning with STEM colleagues, visiting a STEM certified school, writing a grant, maintaining a collection of STEM resources and best practices, and teaching STEM lessons developed in coursework

Dr. Donna Barrett, Ph.D., Metro RESA STEM Endorsement Coordinator

Dr. Donna Barrett is the coordinator of the STEM endorsement. She recently retired from her role as the STEM Director in Fulton County Schools where she was responsible for science curriculum and professional development. She previously worked at Metro RESA in the role of K-12 Science Instructional Supervisor and Coordinator of the K-5 Science Endorsement. She also previously worked at the Georgia Institute of Technology as the Program Director for the GIFT (Georgia Intern-Fellowships for Teachers) program and coordinated internships in university and corporate settings for science and mathematics teachers. She taught science at the middle and high school levels for eighteen years. She earned a Ph.D. in Teaching & Learning with a concentration in Science Education at Georgia State University in 2014. She is a past president Georgia Science Teacher Association and the Georgia Science Supervisors Association. She is a licensed real estate agent for Keller Williams Intown and a STEM/Science consultant.
