• Candidates must hold a valid T-4 or higher Induction, Professional, Advanced Professional, or Lead Professional teaching certificate in one of the following fields:
  • Elementary Education (P-5)
  • Middle Grades Education (4-8)
  • Special Education General Curriculum/Early Childhood Education (P-5) 
  • Any of the following certificates combined with a core academic content concentration in mathematics:
    • Special Education General Curriculum (P-12)
    • Special Education Adapted Curriculum (P-12)
    • Special Education Behavior Disorders (P-12)
    • Special Education Learning Disabilities (P-12)
    • Special Education Deaf Education (P-12)
    • Special Education Physical and Health Disabilities (P-12)
    • Special Education Visual Impairment (P-12) 
    • Gifted Certificate (P-12)
• Candidates must have a minimum of two years of teaching experience.
• Candidates must be recommended for participation in the program by their employing principal.

• Course 1: Foundations of Teaching Practices and Whole Number Operations

  • Cost for Course 1: $880 ($280 for registration, $250 for Embedded Residency, and $350 for Resources)

• Course 2: Numerical and Operational Reasoning - $280 (registration)

• Course 3: Algebraic and Statistical Reasoning - $280 (registration)

• Course 4:  Measurement, Geometric and Spatial Reasoning - $280 (registration)

The candidate will:

• Extend and refine knowledge and skills in using exemplary pedagogical practices with an emphasis on the effective mathematical teaching practices.
• Incorporate mathematical processes including collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity in instruction that includes hands-on exploration, manipulative use, problem-based inquiry, and technology utilization in planning instruction.
• Use knowledge of students and mathematics to plan rigorous and engaging mathematics instruction supporting all students’ access, learning, and mathematical identities.
• Select and use a variety of formative assessment techniques to monitor student progress, gauge students' mathematical understanding, and interpret school-based progress.
• Understand and use the major concepts of number and operations and mathematical modeling to solve problems using multiple strategies, manipulatives, and technological tools; interpret solutions; and determine reasonableness of answers and efficiency of methods.

The candidate will:

• Describe and represent mathematical relationships.
• Understand, model, explain, and develop a variety of (invented and standard) computational algorithms with rational numbers in multiple contexts.
• Use mental computation techniques and apply estimation strategies to determine the reasonableness of results in a variety of mental computation strategies.
• Solve a variety of relevant, contextual problems with rational numbers.
• Incorporate mathematical processes and effective teaching practices to plan instruction that addresses identified goals and student needs.
• Develop a unit of instruction that provides a logical sequence of learning experiences for students to show mastery of identified goals.

The candidate will:

• Look for patterns and identify mathematical relationships that might lead to generalizations.
• Solve relevant problems by creating and analyzing numerical patterns.
• Identify, write, evaluate, and interpret numerical and algebraic expressions as mathematical models to explain authentic situations.
• Write and solve one-step equations and inequalities as mathematical models to explain authentic, realistic situations.
• Use statistical reasoning to ask investigative questions, collect and analyze categorical and numerical data, and represent data.
• Create a learning experience using the statistical reasoning framework and incorporating algebraic reasoning.

The candidate will:

• Use geometric concepts and relationships to describe and model mathematical ideas and real-world constructs.
• Solve relevant problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
• Solve problems involving customary measurements, metric measurement, and time.
• Graph rational numbers as points on the coordinate plane to represent and solve contextual, mathematical problems.

The candidate will:

• Demonstrate the content knowledge and pedagogical skills delineated in program content standards through assignments in the four courses and in their classrooms.
• Work with diverse students in the grade levels of the candidate's base certificate, including grade levels other than the candidate's assigned classroom.
• Schedule a minimum of two classroom observations at times provided by the Authentic Residency Supervisor
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all criteria in at least one observation.
• Provide evidence of content and pedagogical knowledge and skills by submitting artifacts in a portfolio:
  • designated assignments in the courses,
  • observations by supervisors,
  • student work samples including analysis of student work, and
  • self-reflection and evidence of meeting the program standards.
